,Dear Esti
Now there is a ceasefire in Gaza. But we nevertheless would like to send you the following report and some pictures that hopefully might be encouraging for you even when receiving this but after the period of actual fighting.
Elke and me were happy when we heard that people in
Hamburg (about120 km from our home) were planning a solidarity demonstration for Israel on
January 17 at 6 p.m. They chose this hour for enabling also Jewish people to attend the demonstration after Shabbat was over. We went there with Elke’s brother Klaus and our Japanese friend Atsuko who, by the way, is an educated soprano and has a deep love for the Jewish people. In late February she will lead a Japanese tourist group to Israel.
When we reached the place where the demonstration should take place we met a lot of Christian friends. Many Israeli flags were swung and candles were set alight. The motto of the demonstration was ’No peace for Anti-Semitism – Solidarity with Israel’.
When the demonstration started Muslim people approached the edge of the gathered crowd and tried to disturb the different speakers by shouting words of hatred against Israel and her friends. But the police hindered them from doing so.
At the end of the demonstration the
HaTikvah was blown by a trumpeter, and we sang the HaTikvah as good as we were able to do so.
Warmest greetings from
Hans and Elke
